Philosophical Statement

The aim of the BC IRP for physical education is to "enable all students to improve their quality of life through active living.  This statement should then be the focus of all physical education programs.  Unfortunately, many programs do not meet this aim.

The need for change in high school physical education programs is apparent.  A majority of students do not continue taking PE when it becomes an elective.  Part of the reason for this problem is a heavy emphasis on team sport.  By including yoga in the curriculum, teachers are able to reach a whole new group of students while continuing to challenge their 'athletes'.  Yoga offers teachers a chance to enable students to improve their quality of life by encouraging them to focus on their own bodies and work within their limitations.

In her book, How to Use Yoga, Mira Mehta states "yoga is a practical philosophy that aims at uniting the body, mind and spirit for health and fulfilment".  She goes on to tell the reader that the benefits of yoga are not merely physical, but also aid in relaxation and concentration.  By using yoga in with your classes you are able to promote "total and physical and spiritual well-being" (p.7).

It is our goal that students will have fun while learning an activity they can participate in for their whole life.  We hope that every student will experience success and see improvement in their ability level by the end of the unit.

By practicing yoga students:

Above all else remember: Yoga is about standing on your feet, not on your head!
